Our History
Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission
We are a not-for-profit organisation working towards providing quality health services to the poor and towards the eradication of poverty and suffering. We chose our karmabhoomi (land of action) to be Attappady, a tribal block in Palakkad district. Attappady was always known as a land of poverty, malnourishment and related health problems. The region was always in the news for calamities and other issues like infant and neo-natal deaths, land alienation, exploitation etc.
We began our operations in Attappady in 2002 with an initial focus on providing affordable health services to the indigenous population.
In the initial days, medical camps were organized in the remote tribal villages. Later in 2003, an OP with dispensary was started in an old building in Agali, block headquarters of Attappady. In order to provide organized services to the poor, we registered ourselves as a charitable trust in 2004 in the name of Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission.
The primary objective of the trust was to address the problems of infant mortality, neo-natal deaths, malnutrition and other related health issues. But, on working in the region, we realized that there were complex issues influencing the abysmal health and nutrition situation of the tribals like unemployment, low income, low literacy level, land alienation etc.To bring an improvement in the overall health status of the region, a holistic approach was required. And so, over the years we have diversified our activities into the sectors of education, skill development, livelihood promotion and rural development.
