Community Mental Health Programme completes ten years

Community Mental Health Programme was inaugurated on 23rd November 2009 by renowned poet and social worker Srimathi P. Sugathakumari. More than 100 patients are treated every month under this programme. The programme has offered treatment to more than 500 patients. The project was started in 2009 with technical support from Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College, Thrissur under the leadership of Dr.K.S.Shaji.

The partnership with Dr.Chitra Venkiteswaran and her Mehac Foundation has helped the programme to reach more heights and cover more patients. Under the project, free treatment and medicines are given to all mentally ill patients. The patients are followed up every month for ensuring compliance and continuation of drug therapy. They are also given community based rehabilitation. More than 100 patients have become symptom free and resumed their normal lives with treatment.

The 10th year commemoration was held at Palakkad IMA Hall on 1st December. A Seminar on ‘ Community Mental Health- Opportunities and Challenges’ was conducted on the occasion in cooperation with IMA Palakkad. Dr.K.Mohanan (Vice-Chancellor, Kerala University of Health Sciences) inaugurated the programme. Dr.C.K.Chandrasekharan (Past President, IMA Kerala) presided over the inaugural session. Dr.Shaji K.S. (Professor & HOD, Dept.of Psychiatry, Medical College, Thrissur) delivered the Key note address. Dr.Sreeram Sankar, Dr.Narayanankutty, V.P.S.Menon, Dr.Sukumarapillai, DrRajagopalan Nair gave felicitations. Dr.K.Mohanan and Dr.Shaji K.S. were honoured at the session. Dr.Lekha Sukumaran (Senior Medical Officer, ART Centre, District Hospital, Palakkad) was honoured on the occasion of World AIDS day.

Dr.Ramanan Earat (former President, Indian Psychiatry Society, Kerala) presided over the Scientific session. Dr.Narayanan V, (CMO, Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission) spoke on the experiences of conducting the CMHP in Attappady. Dr.Prabhudas, Medical Superindent, GTSH, Kottathara also spoke on the mental health issues of Attappady.
